Exploring Green Bay WI

Dating back to the early 1600’s, Green Bay is considered Wisconsin’s oldest settlement. The smallest city to host a professional sports team is located right on the shores of southern end of Green Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan. This city has leveraged it’s access to the waterways and its abundance of natural resources, to grow the community into Wisconsin’s third largest city behind Milwaukee and Madison. The local and state government are consistently working to develop Green Bay and its surrounding communities, which has paid dividends in making it one of the most loved cities in the nation.

A Brief History Of Green Bay WI

The area that makes up current day Green Bay was once inhabited by the ancestors of the Menominee, Ho-Chunk, and other native peoples for at least 10,000 years. In 1634, French explorer Jean Nicolet arrived in the area and within the following decades fur traders and missionaries made their way to the area. The French named the area “La Baye,” and it served as the main point of entry into the continent’s interior.

The first permanent white settlers arrived a century later, and in the following decades the land shifted from French to British, to eventually American following the Revolutionary War. In the mid 19th century, the Americans built a fort in the area and with that came an influx of people. The city became a industrialized and established itself as a center of iron smelting, lumber milling, and paper products.
